# Check for updates and install one

In NeuralVault 2.0 the app checks for an update when it starts and from Settings, Account, About; it downloads in the background but only installs when you press "Restart to install".

## Steps

1. Open Settings, then Account, then About and find the update panel.
2. Press "Check for updates". The panel reports "Checking for updates...", then one of "Version X is available. Downloading...", a percentage while it downloads, "Version X is ready to install." or "NeuralVault is up to date."
3. When it is ready, a "ready" badge shows. "See what changed in" that version links the release notes.
4. Press "Restart to install". If you have unsaved work the app asks you to confirm first.
5. After the restart, About shows the new version.

## How to tell it worked

The About screen reports the new version after the restart.

## If it does not work

**The panel says updates are not available in this build.**

The panel’s own message says why. Test and Dev builds never update themselves, by design, and are installed by hand.

**The update check failed.**

The panel says "The update check failed." and gives the reason. Check your connection and try again.

**A toast said an update was downloaded but nothing happened.**

Download is automatic and installing is not. Open Settings, About and press "Restart to install".

**The app is never offered an older version.**

That is deliberate. The updater only moves forward.

## Still stuck

Bug reports belong in the app, in Settings, About. Those carry no contact details, so they
