# Install NeuralVault on Windows

The installer is a standard Windows setup that installs for your user only, needs no administrator rights and lets you choose the folder; it creates Start menu and desktop shortcuts.

## Steps

1. Run the installer you have, named NeuralVault-Setup followed by the version. It installs per user, so Windows does not ask for administrator rights.
2. Follow the setup screens. It shows the licence agreement and lets you change the install folder.
3. When it finishes, start NeuralVault from the Start menu or the desktop shortcut.
4. The first screen asks where your vault should live, then the sign-in screen appears.

## How to tell it worked

NeuralVault opens, and its first screen reads "Choose where your notes live" on a new install.

## If it does not work

**Windows shows a blue "Windows protected your PC" panel.**

See the guide on the SmartScreen warning. The installer is signed.

**You need the program somewhere other than the default folder.**

Choose it on the folder screen during setup. The installer allows changing it. Your notes live in your vault folder, not in the install folder.

**You want to know where the app keeps its own data.**

Under your user profile folder, which is why a per-user install is used. Settings, Connections and data, Remove my data lists exactly what is stored there.

## Still stuck

Bug reports belong in the app, in Settings, About. Those carry no contact details, so they
