# NeuralVault shows "Updating NeuralVault" when it starts

In the Beta build, NeuralVault checks for updates and installs them. When one is ready the "Updating NeuralVault" window appears as the app opens; you can also download the newest installer and run it over your copy.

## Steps

1. Know that NeuralVault checks for updates and installs them. *Corrected 2026-10-15: the first Beta build, now withdrawn, had nowhere to fetch updates from; the current Beta checks the website feed. You can also download the newest installer from the download page and run it over your copy. The guide on updating the Beta by reinstalling has the steps.
2. If you do see the window, know what you are looking at. A small window shows "Perpetual Technologies", the NeuralVault mark, the words "Updating NeuralVault", a bar with a percent, one line saying the stage, the size, and the version going from one number to another.
3. Let it run. The stage line moves through "Checking for updates", "Downloading", "Verifying" and "Installing". At "Installing" it says "NeuralVault will close and restart by itself."
4. Do not close it. The app closes and opens again on the new version by itself.
5. To see why it appeared, open Settings, then Account, then About. The switch "Install updates when NeuralVault starts" only acts on an update that has already been downloaded. It says: "If an update has already been downloaded, it is installed as NeuralVault opens, with an Updating NeuralVault screen. An update found while you are working waits for you to press Restart to update."
6. To stop it appearing at launch, turn that switch off. Updates then wait until you press "Restart to update" in the same place. On the Beta the switch is off by default, and you can turn it on in Settings, then Account, then About.
7. After the restart, open Settings, then Account, then About and read the version.

## How to tell it worked

The app opens on the new version, and About shows it.

## If it does not work

**The screen says "The update did not finish".**

It also says that your current version is still installed and works as before, and that nothing was changed. Press "Try again", or carry on and try later from Settings, then Account, then About.

**The app opened normally and skipped the update.**

That is by design. It opens normally when you are offline, signed out, the check is slow, nothing is waiting, or an earlier attempt for the same version did not finish. Check for updates from About.

**The update screen stays and the app never opens.**

If the installer does not take over, the app opens by itself after a short wait. If it does not, close it from the tray or Task Manager, start it again and report it with the code from About.

**You see a code starting NV-UPD.**

See the guide on update error codes. "NV-UPD-001, No update information was found" means the update location did not have the file that lists the latest version. Try again later; if it keeps happening, copy the error details and send them to support. See the guide on updating the Beta by reinstalling.
