# Find, choose or move your vault

Settings, General, Vault names the actual folder on your machine, and lets you point NeuralVault at a different one.

## Steps

1. Open Settings, then General, then Vault. It shows the real path and how many notes are in it.
2. To use a different folder, choose it there. To start a fresh one, create it there.
3. Your notes are ordinary Markdown files in that folder. You can open it in Explorer or Finder and read every one of them without NeuralVault.

## How to tell it worked

The path shown matches the folder you opened, and the note count matches what is in it.

## If it does not work

**The app opens and everything is empty.**

This is nearly always the vault pointing somewhere other than where you think. Read the path on the Vault screen first, before assuming notes were lost. They are files on disk; if the folder still has them, nothing is gone.

**You moved the folder yourself and now it is empty.**

Point the app at the new location from the Vault screen. NeuralVault does not follow a folder you move behind its back.
