A notice says the automatic backup is failing

In the Beta build, a toast and a line under Settings, Workspace, Vault tell you when the automatic backup starts failing; the usual causes are a full disk, a folder NeuralVault is not allowed to write to, or a missing vault folder.

Steps

  1. Read the toast. It reads "Automatic backup is failing." or a longer sentence with a code. It stays longer when it has a code, so you can press "Copy error details". The same failure is kept as a status line under Settings, then Workspace, then Vault.
  2. NV-BACKUP-001, "The disk is full": there was not enough free space to copy the vault into its backups folder. Free some space, or move older backups off the disk. NeuralVault tries again the next time it checks.
  3. NV-BACKUP-002, "NeuralVault was not allowed to write the backup": the operating system refused access. Check the folder is not read-only and that security software is not blocking NeuralVault.
  4. NV-BACKUP-003, "The vault folder was not found": check the vault folder still exists and can be reached, or choose it again in Settings, Workspace, Vault.
  5. NV-BACKUP-999, "The backup could not be written": NeuralVault tries again the next time it checks. If it keeps happening, send us the error details.
  6. Do not wait on it. Copy your vault folder yourself in the meantime, or set up "Second copy" in Settings, Workspace, Vault to keep a copy in a folder you choose, such as another drive.

How to tell it worked

The failure line under Settings, Workspace, Vault goes away after a later backup works.

If it does not work

You want to know where the backups are.
See the guide on vault backups. NeuralVault saves a copy about every six hours while it is open, keeps the newest ten, and stores them in a backups folder next to your vault folder.
The "Second copy" folder is refused.
The card checks that the folder exists, that NeuralVault may save in it, and that it is not inside your vault. A folder inside your vault cannot hold the second copy. Choose one outside it, ideally on another drive.
You need a backup back.
See the guide on restoring your vault from a backup.
