How the assistant reads a web page

In NeuralVault 2.0 the assistant reads a page by fetching it and handing back its main text within a size budget, with a focus option to pick sections and a part option to read on; it always asks first.

Steps

  1. Give the assistant an address and ask it to read the page. It uses its web fetch tool. In Default and Manual a card asks first, and the answer is not remembered for next time. In Plan mode it is refused.
  2. After you approve, the page is cut down to its main content as compact text: headings, paragraphs, lists, code and tables. Menus, footers, forms, cookie and ad blocks and hidden elements are left out, links are shortened and tracking parameters removed. This is done on your computer, with no AI model.
  3. The reply is limited to about 2,000 tokens. A longer page ends with a line starting "Truncated:" that says how many more tokens there are.
  4. To read on, ask for the next part. To jump to what you care about, ask for one topic, for example "just the pricing section". The assistant passes a short phrase as the focus, and you get the best-matching sections by heading, in page order.
  5. JSON and plain text are not cut this way. They keep the older limit of about 10 KB.
  6. The tool will not fetch an address on your own computer or network, and it refuses a redirect to a site you have not allowed.

How to tell it worked

The reply shows the page title and its main text, and a long page ends with the Truncated line telling you how to get the rest.

If it does not work

The reply says the site refused it, asked for a check, or the page is empty without JavaScript, and sends you to your own browser.
That is deliberate. A 401, 403 or 429 answer, a bot-check page, and a page that is blank without JavaScript each get a plain message. NeuralVault does not retry or get past them (the one exception is a single wait on a short Retry-After). Open the page yourself and paste the part you need.
A redirect was refused.
The page sent the request on to a site you have not allowed. The message names the address that was stopped.
It was refused without a card.
Check the mode. Plan mode refuses a fetch. Type /default and ask again.
